Karen had lived in various parts of Africa for much of her life. She knew the continent, or thought she did — which made what happened next all the more meaningful. When she and her partner set out to plan a return trip to South Africa, she quickly discovered that knowing a place and knowing how to weave it into a seamless journey are two entirely different things.
The twelve nights that follow were the itinerary Dalene designed — bush, coast and history, carefully sequenced. Woven around it, Karen made time to reconnect with family and friends still in South Africa, turning the trip into something closer to a homecoming than a straightforward holiday — part reunion, part rediscovery, with Dalene's itinerary as the thread running through the middle of it.

Part One
Johannesburg — The Arrival
The journey opened gently: two nights at a comfortable hotel in Johannesburg to settle in after the overnight flight from London, before the real adventure began. No rushing, no jet-lagged first game drive — just a proper chance to arrive.
Part Two
The Greater Kruger — Walking the Bush
From Johannesburg, a short flight into the heart of the Greater Kruger — a collection of private, unfenced reserves bordering Kruger National Park itself, where wildlife moves freely across the entire region. Three nights in a private chalet came with a full spectrum of safari activity: game drives, night drives, and walking safaris that put Karen and her partner properly into the landscape rather than just observing it from a vehicle. Evenings closed around the fire, the traditional way.

Part Three
Durban — The Coast
After the bush, the ocean. Two nights on the KwaZulu-Natal coast gave the trip its breathing room — the contrast between dust and salt air that turns a good safari itinerary into a properly considered journey rather than a single note played for two weeks straight.
Part Four
Rorke's Drift — Walking Through History
This was the part of the trip Karen hadn't expected to be quite so moved by. Three nights on a 5,000-acre heritage reserve overlooking both Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift — sites of two of the most significant battles of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 — came with guided battlefield tours narrated on-site, walking the ground where the history actually happened rather than reading about it from a museum board.
It's the kind of addition that rarely makes it onto a standard safari itinerary, and precisely the sort of detail that comes from working with someone who genuinely knows the country rather than assembling a trip from a template.
Part Five
The Journey Home
One final night back in Johannesburg before the flight home — a gentle close to a trip that had moved through bush, coast and history in careful sequence, each leg deliberately paced rather than rushed.
Dalene organised the most wonderful trip to South Africa for me and my partner, and I cannot recommend her services highly enough.
